HealthierUS Schools Incentives

The USDA's HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program responsible for creating healthier school environments through the promotion of nutrition and physical activity.

The Together Counts™ program is proud to support the HealthierUS School Challenge by providing schools with the Energy Balance 101 curriculum: a free, dynamic curriculum that teaches students the importance of balancing calories consumed with calories burned. The Energy Balance 101 curriculum complements the HealthierUS School Challenge's mission to create healthier learning environments, and both programs are designed to help children make decisions that lead toward active, healthy lifestyles.

Educators, families and community members are encouraged to use the resources provided by the Together Counts program to:

  • Teach children how to balance the energy they take in from food and beverages with the energy they use during physical activity in a way that promotes the HUSSC's healthy nutrition and physical activity goals.
  • Highlight the importance of a varied diet that aligns with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, as adopted in HUSSC's menu criteria.
  • Help children surpass the minimum physical activity recommendations made by the HUSSC, while learning about the physical, social and emotional benefits of being active.
